John 20:30-31 (NLT)
30 The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.
Last month we observed the season of Lent (remember the word Lent simply means “Spring” – the name of the season of the year in which it is observed), and now we are seeing the changes in weather as the world around us warms up to the sun’s direct light.
For the author of the Gospel of John, we too are now in a new season – or more accurately, a new era. Because Jesus has risen from the grave, we have the opportunity to have life! Not a passing, sin-controlled, fear-ruled, subjected-to-the-old-gods-and-goddesses kind of life, but the abundant, Spirit-filled life that Jesus promised. In John 20:22, Jesus breathes on his disciples and tells them to receive the Holy Spirit.
They will become his true disciples as they abide in him, as they live the life of resurrection! In inviting Jesus into our lives in Lent we find he brings new life with him.
Have you experienced Resurrection Life? What are the places in your life that you know have been healed and changed because of the power of Jesus? Who have you told about those experiences? The life of God’s people should be marked by our sharing of these resurrection moments in our lives. Or perhaps you feel that there are places in you where the life promised in the Resurrection has yet to be realized.
Jesus is ready to breathe his Spirit on you. What’s holding you back from receiving the fullness of the Life he promises? The final scene John records for us is Jesus restoring Peter to be a servant, a shepherd of the first believers. Are you prepared to take up the ministry, the service, that God may be calling you to, in order to taste the Resurrection Life?
