Nothing says “It’s Christmas!” quite like hearing Christmas carols everywhere. So, when did Christmas carols become popular?

The tradition of singing songs at Christmas began in about the 4th century. These songs, however, were usually quite solemn and were written in monasteries (e.g. “Of the Father’s Love Begotten”).

It was not until the 15th and 16th centuries that joyful Christmas carols became popular and were written for everyday people to sing.

Today, we enjoy Christmas music from many different cultures and styles.
